Very good article. I have used a simple statement to help us keep on track as we try to stay Biblically sound and culturally relevant, and it is this:
METHODS ARE MANY, PRINCIPLES ARE FEW
METHODS ALWAYS CHANGE, PRINCIPLES NEVER DO
The Church in today's world seems to lack a multi-generational local Church function. Having been in the Church for over 40 years and have observed that most local Churches have a one genereational system, so what we may consider is to focus on reaching at least three future generations not only with the gospel, but also have four New Testament gatherings under the same local structure. I have learnt that you never shoot the sacred cow. You let it wonder around and die a natural death. So then your existing formal should continue with no changes. The teens should be allowed to have their gatherings in their own cultural comfort zones. The same should be gone among the twenty somethings and the same among the thirty somethings. Once every six months there can be a gathering with all four groups. All groups will stay true to the few Biblical Principles that are laid down as non negotiables.

My wife and I recently went through a class on "The Maker's Diet" which has opened our eyes and changed our thoughts on many foods. I became interested in the clean and unclean foods of the Bible. I love studying the Bible and learning the truth for myself, but your write up on clean and unclean foods is very helpful. Thank you.

K,

This hit the nail on the head. I struggled for a long time with this until I realized that it wasn't up to me to mete out justice. The world would be a scary place if each person's concept of justice was the norm.

Once I was able to get around this, I found much less stress and bitterness in my life.

Your Brother-in-Christ,

Dear Ken
Your article has been a source of great encouragement. God has been constantly speaking to me on this subject lately.

1Co 9:27 No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

Paul has always been one person who lead by his egsample. In Christian evangelical circles a person who smokes is considered a great sinner. But the principle that makes smoking sin is that it destroys our body which is the Temple og the Holy Spirit. Then this principle is also applicable to the food we eat. God has been disciplining me in the area of eating. Do I over eat , do I eat what can lead to diseases , do I eat because it is attractive to my senses or becuse my body needs it.

The Church today needs more Pauls and may we all submit to the Lord in this area of self discipline.

I really appreciate gathering as house Church. I come from a traditional mainline Church. But my children who are in college now were brought up in house Church. But one cnnot be dogmatic on this issue. There are situations were we need a constructed church and have a full time elder. I am from India and in many of our tribal villages when they accept Christ it is not possible to gather in their one room houses (one room used as kitchen, bedroom and iving room ). So a small shed is constructed and as most of them are illiterate a full time elder needs to stay with them and teach God's Word.
Neither can we become judgemental . God works inspite of our failures. God works inspite of our imperfections. God works in and through mainline Churches . I accepted Christ in a mainline Church because a dear brother refused to leave that Church inspite of all its failures.
If God has given us the vision for house church and 1 Cor 14 :26 method of meeting Praise God. But let us fnot eel self righteous about it for we are saved by Grace and not by the way we gather on Sundays.

With love

Ken, thank you so much for this article. I really appreciated your approach to this difficult subject. Rather than saying we simply shouldn't question God, or going into some "band-aid" type of answer. I have a sister who, although she is a Christian, still struggles with this question. And to some degree, we all do. Thank you again. I pray that God will bless you for sharing this.

Yes, Peter was a fisherman, and he had lived by the sea before starting his itenerant ministry. This was in Bethsaida. However, the men from Cornelius meet him at the house of Simon the Tanner, where Peter was a guest. His house was by the sea, because of the stench involved with the tanning trade. Cities actually mandated this. Peter had left off his fishing business long before and devoted himself to preaching and teaching. Paul even points out that Peter was supported by the churches he ministered to.

As in most interpretation context is King.

Sorry, but wasn't Peter a fisherman? That was why he lived beside the sea. Or did he change job?

I like the ISV translation of verse 1" "This saying is trustworthy: The one who would an elder be, A noble task desires he. " Desire must come first or else the rest is meaningless.
